2nd January 2013

Welcome… A New Year and a new website for us, we thought it about time that we updated! This is by no means all that we do but is a snap shot. As always, we much prefer to meet face to face with both existing and potential clients to discuss what we do and how we can help. I take this opportunity to wish all our clients, suppliers, contacts and colleagues a very happy and prosperous New Year.

2012 had highs and lows from a work and personal perspective. It’s difficult to imagine that we will again have such a successful and focussed sporting year what with the Olympics. Those that insisted that it would only be good for London, I think were finally proven wrong; it took the nation by the ‘scruff of the neck’ before, during and after. There is no doubt that commercially in the hotel and hospitality sectors there were winners and losers, but from the profile perspective of UK Ltd it can only be seen as positive. Certainly those of our European and American clients who ventured an opinion about the organisation and reflection of the games did so very positively. We were fortunate enough to be involved with the podium hotel developments by Westfield at Stratford and so saw the evolution of the whole Olympic park site over the 2 years prior to the games. It was and is truly spectacular.

On a more sobering note November saw the sad passing of our good friend and colleague Glen Cunningham, development Architect with IHG. Our thoughts and condolences are with Glen and his family. Glen was a great guy, fantastic to work with, he will be sadly missed.

This next year we face even greater challenges within the Leisure and Hotel sectors. The general flatness of the economy means that development budgets will be inevitably tight right across the piste, no seasonal pun intended! That said prior to Christmas our hotel clients were reporting reasonable occupancy and rates, particularly in the London hotels. Business is also booming in the London Neighbourhood pubs we have been rolling out with Real Pubs. So it’s not all bad…

At the tail end of last year we completed the first of the new ‘Open Lobby Concepts’ for IHG at Holiday Inn Brentford Lock. Early guest feedback is extremely positive; this is now going through a period of intensive market testing before roll out. We also have the client go-ahead on a new meetings room product due to be developed and rolled out during 2013. This has followed the successful breakout area scheme implemented by us at the Crowne Plaza Heathrow last summer.

Elsewhere our work takes us as ever across Europe with developments currently underway in hotels in Holland, Luxembourg and Paris for various clients.

Finally I was very pleased this last year to be part of the judging panel for the European Design Awards and belatedly I would like to offer my personal congratulations to all category winners and the overall hotel of the year.
